Study Shows Suppressing Negative Thoughts Improves Mental Health Outcomes

Results of a recent study challenged the notion in psychology that suppressing negative thoughts is not a good strategy (it is commonly believed it will later cause a “rebound” wear the thoughts return). The participants who practiced suppressing negative thoughts had significantly improved mental health outcomes with no sign of a rebound effect. This is encouraging news because this is equivalent to what is done in meditation- when negative thoughts arise, one is taught to “let them go” and return the attention to what is being focussed on (such as the breath or a mantra).
